Who lives in a computer on your desk?

Steve Jobs wanted a character who "pops up every once in a while, when you least expect it, winks at you and disappears". Unfortunately the bit-mapped Mr Macintosh could not fit in the ROM, but a hook was left if anyone wanted to use the idea later.
