Mac OS X codenames
Ever wondered why Apple call their operating system by cat names? Since the promotion of Mac OS X 10.2 as Jaguar, Apple has put more emphasis on the code name than the product version. So what cat was the first version of Mac OS X? Check the list below and take a look at the screenshots part of Apple tidbits to see how the Mac OS X interface has evolved throughout the feline family.
Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah
Mac OS X 10.1 Puma
Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar
Mac OS X 10.3 Panther
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Where is Apple heading with Mac OS X names? In 2003 the company trademarked four cats including the already released tiger and the soon to be released leopard. The remaining two are lynx and cougar.
